How to Make the Most of Your First Year

By Unknown - 14:45

With Freshers just around the corner and students all around the country getting hyped up for a fun filled week of booze, new friends and no doubt some coughs and sneezes, I thought I’d give you a little advice on how to make the most of your first year of university.

Making the most of...

...Where you live
Almost every university student would say that living on campus is the best thing you could possibly do for first year. It’s much easier than getting a house (provided the accommodation services cooperate) and it’s a sure fire way to make some of your closest friends for the next few years to come. First year is a year of irresponsibility (sorry parents). So why worry about paying bills and catching buses every day? You become a family unit in halls, whether there are 3 or 30 of you, you’re all in the same boat and it’s a great part of the uni experience.

...Societies
Societies are something I really failed to get involved with, and I’m really disappointed I didn’t. They’re a great way to carry on doing something you love, or get involved with something new. Not only that, you can also meet new friends from different halls, years, and courses, and from what I've heard and seen, have some truly amazing nights out with your society too. Furthermore, getting involved with societies looks great on your CV!

...Your course
Your course is a great way to meet new people with similar interests. It’s always best to branch out from your new friends at halls and make more through your course. You’ll find it a lot easier having friends on your course that you can get help from and discuss your work with. Getting stuck in with your course is also a helpful way of knowing you're going in the right direction with your life, try not to just drift along within your course, especially if you're unsure with the choice you've made. If you have any concerns during the year concerning your course, don't hesitate to talk to someone about it.

...Your first year
It’s a year for fun. Your main aim of the year is to pass, though there’s no harm in doing better than that. Just remember that you’re only a Fresher once (in most cases!) and you needn't let work get the better of you. Freshers are the ones we expect to be slumped outside the campus chapel (my friend really did this), slurring your words whilst asking for cheesy chips and occasionally (or frequently) being incapable of making a worthy contribution to your seminar discussions.

To make the most of your first year, you need to get involved, get chatting to new people, make memories and have some hilarious and brilliant stories to share and reflect upon. Good luck!

  1. These are great tips, I wish I'd got more involved in societies and Im going to try and be more involved with everything in third year. Also wish I'd taken more advantage of living literally next to the gym, I never went in first year and now the gym seems so far away when you've got to work 15 mins to get there! Freshers is definitely the time for having a good time, still important to work hard but also just as important to make friends and have a good experience.

    1. Thanks! Yeah same, I just hope it's not a too little too late situation, I've definitely let myself down when it comes to getting involved. Ahh I only started going at the start of second year and mine is a 15 min walk away too, and the motivation to walk there especially during winter is usually the thing between me and exercise! Exactly :)

      Thanks for stopping by! x

  3. Just stumbled across your blog and think you've got a really lovely series of advice posts. I'm working on my own series at the moment (from a creative grads perspective) and it's great to see that I'm not the only one out there that wants to reassure students :)

  4. I definitely wish I got more involved on campus in first year, but have time to make it up :) great advice. Hope you're enjoying the last few weeks of summer before heading back to Keele! Sad to to think this week is my third week of classes already. All my friends are still sleeping in until lunch time!! haha x

    1. I think it was quite daunting for me, did you feel like that? The 'initiation' things really put me off joining a sports society, it all seemed a little intimidating after my sheltered life in Cornwall haha! Thank you :) I am! Oh gosh, that is so rubbish! Suppose it's good to get stuck in, tbh I get bored of having this much time off! It's okay if you're jetting off on holiday every few weeks or have a fun job, but I hate having too much free time so I'd kind of like to be in your position right now! Hope you get a lie in soon and you're enjoying America! x
