Day 3: Your views on drugs and alcohol

Well, this is a widely discussed topic, and as a student I can't really criticise the consumption of alcohol. And, in all honesty, I can't criticise the use of drugs either, but for the opposite reason.

Besides alcohol, I don't take any drugs and I can't condemn the use of them. I condemn the abuse of them of course, but having not tried any myself and felt the affects, I can't criticise something I've never experienced. Some people describe perfectly positive experiences when taking drugs, others negative. And I don't want to go off with some negative yet uninformed spiel about drugs, for the simple reason that I know nothing about them. It's a personal choice not to take drugs, as I'd be too worried about getting addicted and ruining my own life, but I don't stop other people from taking them. Free will and all that jazz!

So, onto alcohol.

Alcohol is both a friend and foe of student life, hence why these days I've really cut down on it. I believe it's a friend and a foe as soon as you hit your teenage years and then, for the rest of your life too. Not only does it take a huge chunk out of your finances, but it takes huge chunks out of your time spent getting an education (yawn right?) and also, out of your health and motivation. (Yawn again?).

I hate to sound all preachy about the benefits of not drinking, because in all honesty, when I do drink, I drink. I've had some brilliant times that alcohol has helped to make amazing, especially at university. And some hilarious memories I have, alcohol has definitely contributed to them. If you don't drink it in excess, it's wonderful stuff, being at that 'happy tipsey' stage is always a good laugh. I've had some brilliant classic drunken moments and because I'm just that lovely, here's a few of my tales so that you can all point and laugh at me: I once punched a bin several times because my friends informed me it called me a 'slag', this then caused them to be literally on the floor laughing. I was in the downstairs cafe of the SU and drew a lot of attention to myself. After a Halloween party last year I crawled around my house and laid on the kitchen floor spinning around on my back and waving my legs in the air singing 'We Can't Stop' by Miley Cyrus. I also made one very failed attempt to climb into an oven (it was switched off mum, I promise) because I thought I was small enough. After coming back from a night out I carried a melon around considering it to be more precious than a baby, and declaring this to my block mates, and made sure no one ate it (I really like melons okay). In my first year I demanded a poor sober woman at Winterfest assure me that Reindeer were in fact real because I was totally baffled by the fact they were in Keele (and that they existed at all - yeah I'm pretty dumb). Another time I tried to prove to a bouncer I was a black belt in Karate by showing him I could kick six foot high, I was however in 5 inch heels (I accidentally typed hell then and that's what it felt like) on a floor made soaking wet by melted ice (the snow had been really bad and many people had walked from their accommodation) and spilt drink, this then resulted in an epic fly into the air and an even more epic crash back down to earth, causing the biggest and most colourful bruise I had ever seen on my thigh. The bouncer was kind of impressed, but mostly felt seriously guilty for asking a really drunk girl to 'prove it'.

But I've chosen to cut down on it because I'd rather spend my money on nights and days where I can remember everything. I'm one of those annoying people who can't always control my drink consumption, so therefore, on occasions end up doing something stupid or not remembering everything, and it's not a good look, or a good feeling the morning after.

I'm just trying to learn my limits and going out once or twice a month definitely suits me fine!

    1. Haha glad to hear it! Imagine if you'd seen me do all this stuff?! It was so embarrassing. Well I think it was, I was too drunk to even notice how many people saw me. My friend just said one minute she saw me talking to the bouncer and the next thing I was laughing on the floor, then I remember slomping over to the sofa and telling my friend I just had to take my shoes off because they were too dangerous haha! Ooh brilliant, I look forward to the first post! x

  3. It's fine in moderation, but I have (ex) friends who are nearing their 30's and still go out every Saturday night and vomit in the streets, fall out with each other and act like complete idiots. Every so often is all good fun though!

    1. I think people should definitely assess their drinking before they hit 20 in my opinion. You need to grow up at some point, but some people, maybe like your ex friends, probably haven't accepted that they are growing up! It's a shame that people ruin the fun nights out with drunken drama and falls out. Moderation is definitely the way to do it! :)

  4. I love a good night out drinking! :P I'm still in first year but we go out maybe once or twice a week, maybe more depending. Mostly it's all been good fun for me although cos I suffer anxiety and panic attacks I've noticed alcohol and an empty stomach make me worse so I am drinking less on nights out when I'm feeling a bit nervy to prevent it :) drugs I haven't really tried any. I think it's up to each individual to figure if they can handle it :) x

    1. I do too! Yeah first year was so so fun for me, then in second year loads of drama seem to be happening around us with people solidifying their friendship groups and moving around in relationships. Hopefully you won't have to experience that! Ah that's a sensible thing to do! Yeah definitely, well said! :) x

  5. I've had my share of recreative drugs, however, my passion lies in alcohol, just like you. Oh, and benzos, when I get the chance. Nothing beats the heavenly feeling of 20mg of diazepam. The rest of the drugs I took were mainly influenced by my drunken state of mind. I get too impulsive when I'm drunk (and I am already impulsive when sober) so that means I feel like taking pills or snorting dodgy stuff... when I'm drunk. When I'm not drunk, I don't feel like taking drugs at all. Okay maybe, depending on the circumstances and situation, but not as in a compulsive urge.
I didn't drink alcohol in the last 2 months. It's temporary, I know, but it helps me and my wallet going through social and laboral life. I think it's alright to drink as long as there's some self-control left. Otherwise, it can be a complicated deal. I think people are free to do whatever they please... But please, just don't try to influence others to do the same, don't diminish who doesn't do drugs or who doesn't drink and DON'T BRAG about how much you've drank and the hangover you had, and bla bla bla... It's so tasteless and ridiculous, I see a lot of teenagers bragging about their own vices on the internet. Stop glamourizing it, for fuck's sake. Your liver will thank you later.
I really liked this post :)

    1. I think many people get influenced to take drugs when they're drunk, it does lead to some decisions you wouldn't usually make when sober, take one night stands for example!
Yeah, I've really toned my drinking down due to finances and uni too, maybe had I more money things would be different but I am discovering a pleasant side to really limiting my alcohol intake. I definitely agree with you, bragging is ridiculous. I have a 'friend' who is always on Facebook talking about what drugs he's taken or how drunk he got, and I just don't see how he's having a good life when he seems to turn to Facebook for validation! I think people need to keep it between themselves and their friends when it comes to nights out and such, like you say glamorizing isn't the way to go. But it's no wonder people much younger than us are drinking when some people talk about how great it is.
Thank you! I really liked reading your response, a great personal opinion :)
