Walking Down a Dead End

By Unknown - 22:27

Now, I've been a big fan of The Walking Dead since my friend introduced me to it and we watched the whole of the first season in one night, staying up to the early hours just to see how Rick and the gang got on in the zombie ridden world. But now, with the other half of season 4 on the go I'm starting to wonder how many more of those tense situations where that cast member *cough* Carl *cough* still doesn't die that I can take.

I hate to make a dig at the show, because it's absolutely brilliant, and I've watched each series countless numbers of times, but The Walking Dead has certainly made me realise why the whole zombie apocalypse story line works so much better in films in the long run.

First and foremost, but not on all occasions, you don't give a crap about the characters in zombie films, you simply want to be entertained for an hour and a half. But with The Walking Dead, it's impossible not to shed a little tear when a character you've come to love over the years gets killed in a zombie attack or by some murderous and greedy human being who has lost all sense of morality. And honestly, who's going to watch The Walking Dead if they kill Daryl?

Then of course, there's the fact that TWD has exhausted most of the possible conclusive solutions to a zombie apocalypse, and also exhausted how the group aren't going to achieve that heaven sent ending some films are graced with. There isn't a World War Z cure out there for them, because they made sure of that in season 1. There's probably another safe haven, but there's more than likely someone, alive or dead, who will take it from them. In the case of films, they can conclude with such an ending where the world is still at war with the dead, and you're either left anticipating a sequel or satisfied that the characters that you haven't really got attached to, are going to die.

So, how is this, in my eyes, making TWD tedious to watch? Well because I can't see a solution. The current situation the gang are in sends them straight back to square one. They're all separated, you're all left wondering who's going to survive the next episode (more than likely everyone will, TWD hasn't got that cut throat Game of Thrones thing going on). And having the group back to where they were 3 seasons ago, but this time more dispersed than ever, means the story line can only go in circles.

How many times have the group met someone they can't trust? Or been split up? Or found a safe haven that was destroyed by either a jealous and disturbed man or well...a dead hungry man?

You want things to go right for them, and you want most of the characters to survive (soz Carl, but it's definitely personal). But what comes after survival? TWD is only going to get more tedious to watch in my opinion, because the group either has to find help (which there evidently is none of) or be killed off. And there's no comedic heroes like Columbus and Tallahassee to save the day, or a famous persons house to hide away in.

If only they could just go to the Winchester and wait for all this to blow over, aye?

What are your thoughts on the latest season of TWD - am I wrong to think the group have run out of happy endings

  1. I only just found out about this program and have watched the first series and half the second series in 3 days :). I am already starting to wonder how many seasons they can get out of a zombie theme though as surely if there is no cure eventually they will all die! xx

    1. I saw on Twitter that you had! And all the series are amazing, but you do start to question how long they go on for. They certainly can't kill all the zombies because they've probably taken over the world, and even if there's a country which isn't infected, how are they going to get there! I love TWD but I hope they don't drag it out because I think it could ruin it! xx

  2. well, in my opinion, The Walking Dead is by far one of the best series I've ever watched. I never miss an episode, and the suspense it has is absolutely incredible. I differ with you, because what makes TWD great is precisely how different of the other zombie apocalypse movies it is. In TWD you have character development, not just a bunch of zombies eating people and having no ending. And it takes great skills to achieve four and a half seasons of zombie apocalypse and still keep the audience entertained. I am a big fan of the series.

    1. I still agree it's one of the best series, don't get me wrong! I love it :) I do love the suspense, I think it was just episode 9 with Carl I found tiring because we knew Rick and Carl were both going to live so I wasn't sure why they were playing with that story line, but that's just my opinion! Oh no I much prefer TWD to zombie films!! I love the character development too, that's what I mean when I say about getting attached, I love that element completely! Don't take this as I'm not a big fan, I totally am! I just don't want them to start having to drag it out because they want it to go on for longer and then ruin something that's so great!

And I watched Sunday nights episode and it was totally brilliant, I loved it as always!

  4. I've also been a long running fan of walking dead and I gotta say after reading this post I'm on the same boat as you... the "wait where is this gunna go now" boat. I'm still optimistic in thinking there's something new waiting for us that we can't imagine, but I also agree with them running out of happy endings and different things to cover, the walking dead is too real for an actual happy ending, insightful maybe :p

    1. Exactly! I love how realistic it feels in comparison to some zombie apocalypses, but after everything they've been through they can't just throw in something unrealistic to give the group a happy ending! I absolutely love it still and really hope it keeps up the good work, and whilst this series is good, I do kind of hope they come to some sort of conclusion with maybe 1 final season. There may still be a cure, and that'd be great, but most of the population's dead and they're in the middle of no where haha!

      xx
